The City of Huntington is partnering with GFL Environmental Inc. to provide residential trash and recycling services starting in 2023.

Following a competitive bid process, GFL has been awarded a five-year contract that takes effect the week of January 1. We are working to make this transition to GFL as smooth as possible. Once we’ve navigated these changes, we anticipate an improved experience for Huntington residents. Here is what to expect:

2023 Trash Collection Map

With one limited exception, your trash collection day will remain the same. You can verify your weekly trash collection day on the map above. (In particular, the Hidden Hamlets neighborhood north of Old U.S. 24 near Broadway Street will have a new collection day starting the week of January 1.)

2023 Recycling Schedule and Map

This is the biggest shift, but one that should make things simpler for everyone. Recycling collection will continue on an alternating Week A and Week B cycle, but it will now be the same day as your trash pickup for all households starting in 2023. (Please Note: The week of January 1 is a "B" week.)

One-Way Streets

GFL’s truck can pick up trash and recycling bins on both sides of a street. Households on one-way streets will no longer need to move their bins to the opposite side of the road as of January 1.

Bin Placement

Correct placement of your bins for curbside trash and recycling is important to ensure proper and timely pickup. This guide will help make sure you’re prepared:

  • Place your trash can and recycling bin at the curb with the wheels facing your house and the lid opening into the street.
  • Keep your garbage and recycling bins four feet apart and at least four feet or more from any obstacles such as mailboxes, cars, lamp posts, or power lines.
  • Containers must be out by 6 a.m. and pulled back to residence by 7 p.m.

GFL Bin Placement Guidelines

New Bins

WM and Republic Services will retrieve their bins following their last service date at your household. In the meantime, GFL will already have begun distributing new bins to households throughout Huntington. There could be a short overlap period where some households will have bins from both GFL and WM/Republic Services, but that will be temporary.

Best practice: Store the GFL bins on your property once they are dropped off at your residence in December. Continue using the WM and Republic Services bins through the date of your last pickup in December. Then, leave the empty WM and Republic Services bins at the curb for those companies to retrieve and begin using your GFL bin.

  • Trash – Your final WM trash collection day will be your regular pickup during the week of Monday, December 26. Click here for the trash collection calendar.
  • Recycling – Your final Republic Services recycling collection day will be your regular pickup during the week of Monday, December 19 (Week B schedule), or the week of Monday, December 26 (Week A schedule). Click here for the recycling collection calendar.

2023 Holiday Schedule Adjustments

The following holidays could affect your service date:

  • May 29th - Memorial Day
  • July 4th - Independence Day
  • September 4th - Labor Day
  • November 23rd - Thanksgiving Day
  • December 25th - Christmas Day

Collection services will be delayed by one day during the holiday week, beginning the date of the holiday.

Rates & Customer Service

The City also will eliminate a $1.25 monthly processing fee in 2023. Combined with reduced monthly recycling charges and a small rise in monthly trash collection charges, residents with standard service (one trash bin and one recycling bin) will pay only 25 cents more per month for trash and recycling services in 2023 compared to current rates. There will be a 4 percent annual adjustment through the remainder of the contract.

A dedicated GFL Route Manager will work with City staff on a daily basis to provide ongoing customer service and support. Please call City Services at (260) 356-4720 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday if you have any questions or concerns.
